Jammu: According to officials, no reports of damage or casualties have been received so far as two mild intensity earthquakes struck the mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, while a separate tremor was recorded in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
The National Centre of Seismology (NCS) reported that the initial earthquake, measuring 4.1 magnitude, occurred at a depth of 11 km, with a latitude of 32.96 degrees north and a longitude of 75.79 degrees east. The tremor, which occurred at 3.50 am local time, jolted residents from their sleep and prompted them to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure.
A second tremor, measuring an intensity of unknown magnitude, took place at 5.22 am. It had a depth of 10 km, with a latitude of 33.01 degrees north and a longitude of 75.78 degrees east. The National Centre of Seismology, the primary government agency monitoring earthquake activity, provided these details.
Residents of Doda have experienced a series of seismic events in the past six days, with a total of 10 tremors of varying intensities. On June 13, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck the district, resulting in structural damage to numerous buildings, including houses, due to the strong tremors.
Meanwhile, Ladakh also encountered a mild earthquake. The NCS reported a 3.9 magnitude tremor at 10.38 pm, followed by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in Leh at 9.44 pm. The latter tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km, approximately 215 km northeast of Leh.
While these earthquakes have caused concern among the local population, the absence of any reported damage or injuries provides some relief. The authorities remain vigilant, closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected regions.
