Hyderabad, July 31, 2023: The Hyderabad Metro Rail is set to undergo a massive expansion, with all phases combined, amounting to a staggering Rs. 69,100 crore. NVS Reddy, the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL), revealed the ambitious plan after the Telangana Cabinet’s approval for the development of eight Metro extension corridors and four Outer Ring Road (ORR) Metro corridors, covering a total distance of 278 km and estimated to cost about Rs. 60,000 crore.
In addition to the aforementioned extensions, the Cabinet also gave the green light for the BHEL-Lakdikapul line, which includes connectivity to Miyapur (26 km) and Nagole-LB Nagar (5 km) as a Joint Venture (JV) partnership project of the Government of Telangana (GoTS) and the Government of India (GoI), with a revised cost estimate of Rs. 9,100 crore.
The vision for the project was outlined under the guidance of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who directed the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department and Metro Rail authorities to prepare Preliminary Project Reports (PPRs)/Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for all the proposed corridors. The cumulative cost for all the projects sums up to approximately Rs. 69,100 crore (Rs. 60,000 crore + Rs. 9,100 crore).
The expansion plan aims to significantly enhance the metro’s reach, covering a vast area within the Hyderabad Metropolitan region. With 69 km of operational metro, 31 km of Airport Metro, 31 km of BHEL-Lakdikapul with Miyapur connection, Nagole-LB Nagar connectivity, 5.5 km of old city metro, and the proposed 278 km of the new eight extension and four ORR Metro corridors, the total metro coverage in the region will be an impressive 415 km.
The grand expansion comes as a major boost for the city’s transportation infrastructure and is expected to benefit countless commuters, offering improved connectivity and easing traffic congestion in key areas. The preparation of detailed project reports will pave the way for efficient planning and execution of this significant development, setting Hyderabad on a path of continued progress and growth.
